Seeing this debate on TV might be something new and progressive, but I don’t need Diablo Cody telling fags to embrace self-hatred.
This whole storyline with Marshall is enough to make me stop watching the show. But I think Marshall’s character’s responded to the concepts with a kind of grace the situation doesn’t necessarily have.
But the fact is no behavior warrants bigotry of any sort. Period.
I don’t think it’s bigotry at all. Nor is it self-loathing. In fact, I think it’s the correct approach to issues which affect non-heterosexuals.
The Suffragettes didn’t get the vote by standing in kitchens telling themselves “what do I know, I’m just a woman”. Legalised interracial marriages weren’t achieved by a bunch of African-Americans sitting on the ground eating fried chicken and watermelon. Gays won’t get treated seriously or with any degree of respect if they keep prancing about in fairy wings when they’re trying to accomplish something serious.
I don’t really see being gay as being a different lifestyle. Some men naturally prefer blondes, some men naturally prefer brunettes—some men naturally prefer dick. It insults the authority of the system you’re trying so hard to crack into if you think playing into stereotypes is going to get you anywhere.
